The reconstruction of the churches of the plains of Nineveh will begin soon

10/21/2021 Iraq (International Christian Concern) – According to a recent Syriac press report, the reconstruction of three destroyed churches in the Nineveh Plains, Iraq, is expected to begin soon. These churches are located in the district of Al-Hamdaniya and Bartella in the plains of Nineveh. One of the three churches is Catholic and the other two are Orthodox.
The reconstruction announcement was made by Abdul Qadir Dakhil, executive director of the Mosul Reconstruction Committee. According to Dakhil, the objective of this reconstruction project is to contribute to the return of displaced Christians from the plains of Nineveh. There has been an ISIS-led conflict in the Nineveh Plains since the summer of 2014, when ISIS chased Christians, desecrated churches and destroyed homes in the area. Thousands of Christian families fled their homes in the plains of Nineveh in search of a better future. These are the Christians that the restored churches would serve.
Regarding the reconstruction process, Dakhil explained that the first step is to remove the rubble from the sites; thereafter, engineering work will begin. Time will tell if the restoration of these churches will succeed in reviving the vibrant Christian population of the Plains of Nineveh.
