Clash between Afghan forces and the Taliban near Kunduz
Afghan security forces and armed citizens clashed with Taliban fighters on the outskirts of Kunduz on Saturday (July 10) in an attempt to drive them out of the northern city. Video footage obtained by Reuters showed armed citizens and Afghan forces on the battlefield on the outskirts of the city, with gunfire heard in the background. An Afghan army commander in Kunduz claimed they had pushed back the Taliban fighters. “The Afghan forces are ready to defend their homeland and in the last few days the enemy has carried out a massive offensive in the town of Kunduz, but they have faced strong resistance from the Afghan forces and as a result the enemy has suffered heavy losses. ” The Taliban’s gains have been particularly dramatic in the northern provinces where they have long been sidelined. Most of the districts of Kunduz have now fallen to the Taliban. Islamist insurgents have been advancing for weeks in an offensive that gained momentum as the United States withdrew from its main base, ending its two-decade intervention in the country. The United States agreed last year under President Donald Trump to withdraw its troops subject to Taliban security guarantees. Talks between the Afghan government and Taliban negotiators in Qatar have not progressed substantially, although the two sides have held meetings in recent days.
