Spartans drop double OT Heartbreaker to Air Force

SPRINGS COLORADO, Colo. – First year students Taylor phillips and Kayla fortenberry scored second-half goals to put San Jose State women’s football in a prime position to clinch an Air Force victory on Friday night, but the Falcons scored their own goals late in regulation and again with just 13 seconds remaining in second overtime to escape with the win. The Spartans (3-6-0, 0-1-0) played an outstanding game in the ruthless high altitude, finishing with 18 shots, including seven on frame.

- After a relatively calm first half, the Spartans scored the first in the 69th minute as Evan’s House beat two defensemen and found a wide-open Phillips inside the box for what turned out to be his second goal of the season.

- The Air Force responded a few minutes later to tie the score at 1-1, but SJSU regained the lead in the 81st minute. Jada wilson, seeing his first action of the year since returning from injury, crossed to Fortenberry inside the box that landed a shot that hit the post and rebounded. Fortenberry didn’t miss her follow-up shot as she scored her first career goal in a Spartan kit.

- The Spartans almost held on in regulation, but the Air Force scored on a long goal with only three minutes remaining to force the game to extend.
- Neither team had much success in the first overtime period as the defenses locked down. In the second OT, SJSU nearly put an end to it as House lost the game and beat the keeper head-to-head, but the shot hit the post.

- Air Force (4-3-1, 1-0-0) finished the game with only: 13 to go as Jordi Ives scored the golden goal.
- The Spartans edged the Air Force 18-14 and held a 7-6 advantage in shots on frames.
- House led all players with five shots, two on goal and was credited with an assist. blackberry and Sabrina weinman each finished with three strokes each.
The Spartans return to action Sunday for a midday kick against Colorado College. Children 12 and under get free entry and fans can receive a free Spartan rally towel.
