Snyder breaks 50-year-old points record against No. 13 UC San Diego

The Air Force Men’s Water Polo (20-8, 1-3 WWPA) fell to #13 UC San Diego (11-10, 6-0 WWPA) 12-7 in a Friday night WWPA game at the Canyonview Aquatic Center in La Jolla, CA Main Utility Grant Snyder had a hat trick with three goals and an assist for four points to set the Air Force single-season record for most points in a season.
Snyder’s four points gave him 148 for the season, surpassing the previous record of 145, set by Ben Phillips 50 years ago in 1972. Snyder, who was announced as one of 20 players on the Cutino Award list Watch for the best college water polo player yesterday, entered the game leading the nation in points.
It was a tough game early on for the Falcons, who were held scoreless in the first quarter. Down 2-0 after the first quarter, the Air Force beat the Tritons 4-3 in the second quarter to come within a point at 5-4 at halftime.
UCSD took control of the game in the third quarter with a 4-1 advantage to go ahead 9-5. The Falcons could only score two goals in the fourth.
Junior ian christie also added four points with a goal and three assists, the best on the team. Second year Jacob Yi scored a hat-trick with three goals. Senior AJ made eight saves in goal.
The Air Force will resume action tomorrow, October 22, against Concordia University. The game begins at 6 p.m. MT at Beckman High School in Irvine, CA.
