Sam Gilman breaks Academy record in All-America performance
Gilman crossed the finish line in a program record time of 13:30.82 – a finish that took nearly a second off Patrick Corona’s 2017 norm and a mark that ranks as the third fastest time fast in the history of Mountain West.
The junior, who stayed near the back of the 24-rider field for the first 3,000 meters, began to work his way through the pack over the next two laps and used the fastest time of all. runners at the 3,800-meter split (1:02.61) to break into the top 16. He gained eight more spots over the next two rounds to secure first-team All-America status, then used a sprint final of 55.75 to claim the top five – the best finish by a member of the men’s team since 2015.
The All-America Trophy marked the third award of the year for Gilman, who earned All-America honors in cross country, indoor track and outdoor track. It is also the fourth individual Academy record of the year for the junior, who had the program’s top marks in the mile, 3,000 meters and 5,000 meters events during the indoor season, while also anchoring the medley distance relay to a school standard this winter. .
The four points from Gilman’s finish tied the Air Force for 54th in the men’s team standings, as the Falcons were the only conference or service academy team to score in the national meet.
