Indonesian navy hails ‘mental perseverance’ of teen stranded at sea
TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – The Indonesian Navy (TNI AL) on Monday praised the mental perseverance of Ridho Ilhami (14) who managed to survive by running aground at sea for three hours after falling from a ferry over the Kepulauan Seribu (Thousand Islands ) on Friday June 18.
Citing Antaranews, Navy Staff Deputy Chief Vice Admiral Ahmadi Heri Purwono represented Navy Chief Admiral Yudo Margono in imparting respect for the Navy to the teenager, while also handing him a number of army gifts as a sign of appreciation.
“Indonesian Navy praises mental perseverance and bravery [of Ridho] on the waters which is our area of work, ”said the deputy of the navy staff at JICT port in Jakarta. “We have to help this kid since he dreams of being in the Navy, his mentality definitely is.”
He also expressed his gratitude to the Navy sailors aboard the KRI Sembilang-850 vessel who quickly responded and rescued the distressed teenager.
Reported on Friday, Ridho Ilhami was stranded at sea 45 kilometers from the mainland of Banten and was rescued by a naval combat vessel conducting a routine patrol approximately three hours after it fell into the ocean.
