India and Indonesia discuss counter-terrorism, defense and cybersecurity
New Delhi, March 17 (IANS): India and Indonesia held talks on counter-terrorism, maritime, defense and cybersecurity cooperation on Thursday and also signed the memorandum of understanding for a security dialogue, according to a statement.
India’s national security official Ajit Doval co-chaired the second India-Indonesia Security Dialogue with Indonesia’s Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Mohammad Mahfud.
“They discussed issues such as cooperation in counter-terrorism, navy, defense and cyber,” the Indian embassy in Indonesia said.
Doval and Mahfud signed the Memorandum of Understanding for Security Dialogue to further enhance cooperation on political and security issues.
He also met with Indonesian Foreign Minister Ibu Retno Marsudi and exchanged views on bilateral, regional and global issues.
“The two leaders reiterated their commitment to further strengthen the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries,” the embassy statement said.
The two countries are also strengthening their bilateral defense relationship with militaries conducting joint exercises.
Last year, in September, the Indian and Indonesian navies began a two-day bilateral maritime exercise in the Sunda Strait. Indian Navy ships Shivalik and Kadmatt participated in the “Samudra Shakti” exercise with the Indonesian Navy from September 20 to 22, aimed at strengthening bilateral relations, improving mutual understanding and interoperability in maritime operations.
“The exercise will also provide a suitable platform to share best practices and develop a common understanding of maritime security operations,” the Indian Navy said.
The ‘Samudra Shakti’ exercise was designed in 2018 under India’s Act East Policy, and has grown in complexity over the past two editions to involve the conduct of complex maritime operations, including military interdiction operations (MIO), cross landings, air defense rounds, practice gunfire, resupply approaches and tactical maneuvers.
