Hawks Fall at No.11 Denver

DENVER, Colo .– Carter Savoie’s hat trick led the 11e-classed Denver Pioneers to an 8-0 victory over the Air Force in a non-conference hockey game on Saturday, October 16, at Magness Arena in Denver, Colo.
Denver (4-0-0) offered the game to the Air Force early in the first period and scored two goals in three minutes midway through the first period. The Pioneers connected on a game of noughts and crosses as Savoie scored on the back gate at 10:09. DU took a 2-0 lead at 1:12 pm when Massimo Rizzo repelled a shot from the point of Savoy.
Denver kept the pressure on in the second period and scored three goals in the top 10. Bobby Brink gave Denver a 3-0 lead when he fired Cole Guttman’s shot 44 seconds into the second. DU’s next two goals came on the power play. Savoie scored in a 4-on-3 situation with a point shot at 4:46. The second-year winger then completed the hat trick at 9:35 of the second on the power play. After the goal, Senior Air Force Alex schilling was replaced in goal by junior Austin Park, his debut at university.
Twenty-four seconds into the third period, Denver took a 6-0 lead over Guttman’s wrist from the right circle. The Pioneers scored their third power-play goal of the game as Cameron Wright scored with a right-circle wrist shot at 7:10. With 2:52 to go, Rizzo’s second of the game was the final margin.
Denver dominated the Air Force, 42-25, in the game. The Pioneers were 3-for-6 on the power play while the Air Force was 0-for-4. Schilling made 21 saves in 30 minutes while Park made 13 in his first 30 minutes in the crease. Denver first-year goaltender Matt Davis stopped all 25 players he faced in his first career start.
Air Force (1-3-0) travels to St. Charles, Missouri for a two-game non-conference series against Lindenwood University, Saturday through Sunday, October 23-24.
